How to Apply For a Passport in India?

In India, a Passport is one of the most important documents for every Indian citizen, as it is a proof of identity and an essential document for worldwide travel. It allows the holder to travel abroad and prove that he is an Indian citizen in any foreign country.

The national government issues a passport to the citizens of the country. The purpose of a passport is to allow the holder to travel across borders.

If your age is 18 years or above, you are eligible to apply for a passport in India. However, if you are a minor, validity of your Passport will be restricted to 5 years or till you attain the age of 18. But minors between 15 to 18 years of age can apply for a 10-year validity passport or a valid passport until they attain the age of 18.

Documents Required to Get A Fresh Passport.

How to Apply for A Passport Online?

Follow these steps to apply for a Passport online.

  • To apply for a new or re-issued Passport by submitting an online form, users must register on the Passport Seva Portal.
  • After registration, enter the Passport Seva Portal.
  • Now, click on Apply for Fresh Passport or Re-issue of Passport link.
  • You need to fill in the required data in the form and send it.
  • After submitting the Passport application form for a new or re-issued passport, click on the link “Pay and Schedule” to schedule an appointment at the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK).
  • It’s time to find the location of Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) and select your PSK.
  • After booking the meeting at the selected PSK, you can make the payment online by Credit/Debit Card (MasterCard & Visa), Internet Banking (only for State Bank of India (SBI), and Affiliated Banks), or SBI Bank Challan.
  • Moreover, you can calculate the fee for Passport services using the online fee calculator.
  • You can print the Application Receipt containing the Application Reference Number (ARN) or the Appointment Number.
  • Finally, visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) with the original documents where an appointment has been registered and the original documents.

Things You Need to Consider While Applying for a Passport.

  • Applicants are advised to visit their Passport Office homepage to find out about the additional documents required, if any.
  • You are required to submit the original documents along with a set of self-attested photocopies to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) for processing.

Minor

  • It is assumed that the consent of both parents is available unless otherwise stated.
  • For younger applicants, documents can be attested by parents.
  • The minor applicant is entitled to non-ECR till the age of 18 years.
  • You can submit a current document certifying the address(s) of the parent(s) for underage applicants.
  • It is recommended that you carry the original and self-attested copies of your parent’s Passport to the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) if your parents have a Passport.

ECR / ECNR

  • ECR means Emigration Check Required, and ECNR means Emigration Check Not Required.
  • Putting Non-ECR (previously ECNR) stamps has been discontinued.
  • The ECR status will be printed in the Passport of the applicants falling in the ECR category. For those who fall under the non-ECR category, there will be no special mention in the Passport.
